Hawaiian Theme Enlivens NNHW 2014

Published in January 9, 2014 Issue

Living the Aloha Spirit is the theme for National Nursing Home Week (NNHW), May 11 - 17, 2014.  To Hawaiians, the word “aloha” has a deeper significance than just a word of greeting or fond farewell. By Living the Aloha Spirit, we show others love and respect and joyfully share life in order to create a better world. Key attributes of the “Aloha Spirit” include patience, kindness, humility and good feelings in caring about others. Embracing the Aloha Spirit will reflect how your skilled nursing care center practices “aloha” as a means to provide a harmonious environment for residents, patients, families, staff and any person who interacts with the long term and post-acute care community.

Register now for the 2013 Winter Legislative Conference scheduled for February 12 & 13 at the Omni Richmond Hotel.   The one constant providers can count on in health care is change!  As we enter a new year, long term care providers face unprecedented challenges in the delivery of care to increasingly frail and sick resident populations.  In this year’s General Assembly Session, legislators will address Virginia’s budget needs and other measures affecting nursing and assisted living facilities.  Proposed legislation before the 2013 General Assembly could potentially add additional regulatory burdens to the post-acute and long term care sector.

Resident Rights Posters Available

Published in October 17, 2012 Issue

Updated Resident Rights posters are now available. According to the Office of Licensure and Certification, until the Nursing Home regulations are revised the poster in its current form (which is considered the “universal poster”) meets the intent of the regulation.  However, if for some reason the facility chooses to craft its own poster and not use the universal poster, then the name of the complaint coordinator of the OLC and telephone number must be included.  VHCA has provided copies to the State Ombudsman who will distribute the posters to facilities through local Ombudsmen.  If you have not yet received a copy, contact your local Ombudsman or Kathy Robertson in the VHCA office at kathy.robertson@vhca.org.
