On September 30 VHCA members elected new leadership for the association during the annual business meeting held in conjunction with the Convention and Trade Show.  The terms for the new officers and directors begin on January 1, 2016.

All AHCA members are encouraged to participate in this process.  In an effort to create diverse and widespread representation, appointments to specific committees may be limited to one participant per state and company.  To assist in the process, individuals should be nominated for up to three committees and rank their selections in order of preference.

AHCA Accepting Nominations for 2016-2017 Committees

Matt Mansell Joins VHCA Staff

Matt Mansell joined the Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) staff as the new Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs on August 3.  Mr. Mansell will serve as VHCA’s primary advocate before the General Assembly and Virginia’s regulatory agencies.  As needed, he will also work on federal legislative and regulatory issues. 

CCR Welcomes Jeannie Adams as Director of Legal Services

Commonwealth Care of Roanoke (CCR) has announced that Jeannie Adams will serve as its new Director of Legal Services. Ms. Adams has represented CCR during her tenure as a Director at Hancock, Daniel, Johnson & Nagle, PC, a Richmond, Virginia law firm specializing in health law and representing health care providers before state and federal agencies.

Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) member Brad Dalton has been promoted to Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for American HealthCare, LLC (AHC), the management company for 17 Heritage Hall Healthcare and Rehabilitation Centers throughout Virginia. Dalton, who has served as the company’s Vice President of Business Development since 2012, has been with AHC since 2008 and supported the organization in a variety of ways, including marketing, communications, political advocacy, employee relations, and support of various organization-wide program rollouts.

Amy Hewett Joins VHCA Staff

Amy Hewett joined the Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) this week as Vice President of Strategy and Communications.  This position was developed to direct and oversee VHCA’s strategic and long-range goal planning, provide the overall direction and implementation for all communications and marketing for VHCA, and to serve as a lobbyist for VHCA before state and federal officials in support of the association’s advocacy efforts.

Five Star: Changes in 2015

The American Health Care Association recorded a 53 minute webinar on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 for members of the Association outlining proposed changes to the Five Star Rating System for Skilled Nursing Facilities.  Several quality measures will be added (such as antipsychotic usage), and MDS auditing will be expanded from five states to all states.  The presentation also focuses on the change in how staffing information will need to be supported by facilities.  The recording of the Five Star webinar can be accessed here.  To only view the slides, click here

VHCA Names New President

The Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) Board of Directors announces the appointment of Keith Hare as its fifth President of the 62-year old Association.  Mr. Hare most recently served as Vice President of Government Relations for VHCA.  Prior to joining VHCA, Mr. Hare served as Deputy Secretary of Health & Human Resources for Governor Robert F. McDonnell.  He has also held positions at two of Virginia’s largest health care trade and professional associations and served as a Congressional aide in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. In 2013, Mr. Hare was recognized by “Our Health Magazine” as one of fifteen Richmond Health Care Leaders under forty.  He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and is currently pursuing his Masters of Public Administration at Virginia Tech.

Congratulations to the 2014 Regirer Nurse Scholarship Recipients

So far this year, the Commonwealth Long Term Care Foundation has awarded $54,000 in Regirer Nursing Scholarships to 36 recipients employed in Virginia long term care facilities.  There are additional applicants pending acceptance into a nursing program.  Each awardee will receive $1,500 toward the cost of their nursing education.  To receive the award, each recipient completed an extensive application, was personally interviewed by a member of the Foundation’s Nurse Scholarship Committee, and agreed to work in a member long term care facility after graduation.

David Tucker Chosen as a Future Long Term and Post-Acute Care Leader

Hobart Harvey Announces Retirement from VHCA

Hobart Harvey, Vice President of Financial Services, has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2014.  Mr. Harvey has served on the staff of VHCA since 1996 and has worked on a variety of Medicare and Medicaid payment issues for members.  He has led the VHCA Payment for Services Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Managed Care with distinction.  Mr. Harvey has used his knowledge and analytical skills to help VHCA and its members achieve Medicaid funding increases from the Virginia General Assembly, and he has worked to inform and educate regulators and legislators about long term care payment programs in Virginia.  He has been an excellent resource for members seeking advice on the many different issues related to payment and financial matters.

Over 500 long term care professionals gathered in Roanoke last week to recognize the best and brightest that enable Virginia’s nursing and assisted living facilities to deliver truly outstanding post-acute and long term care services. Members attended dynamic and informative education sessions while 117 exhibitors showcased the latest and best products and services to trade show visitors.  Community involvement award winners, volunteers, departing Board members and the top five statewide award recipients were honored at the Annual Banquet.  Additionally, 76 golfers and tournament sponsors supported the Regirer Nurse Scholarship Fundraiser Tournament to raise funds for future scholarship awards. 2012 Convention & Trade Show Scheduled for October 1st - 4th

We’re proud and excited to provide information about this year’s Annual Convention & Trade Show scheduled for October 1 - 4, 2012 at the Embassy Suites Hampton Roads - Hotel, Spa and Convention Center in Hampton, Virginia.  

American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living’s President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parkinson, this year’s Convention keynote speaker, will discuss the opportunities and challenges confronting the long term and post-acute care profession.  As a former Governor of Kansas and a nursing facility operator, Governor Parkinson has unique insight into the future of long term care and how quality and payment will be closely tied together as we move to more coordinated models of care.  The relationship with government programs and other provider groups will be critical to the success of long term care providers.  In the coming years and decades, skilled nursing centers and assisted living communities have the ability to demonstrate the value and quality of care the sector provides to millions of Americans.  Governor Parkinson will explain how providers and caregivers can help shape this future and “win.”

Tommy East has been promoted to President and CEO of American HealthCare, LLC, the Roanoke-based management company for 16 Heritage Hall Healthcare and Rehabilitation Centers throughout Virginia.  He succeeds Ted LeNeave who will be a Vice President with Kindred Healthcare based in Salt Lake City, Utah.  East, who has served as the company’s chief operating officer since 2010, is a 31-year veteran of eldercare, having managed assisted living and rehab facilities and worked in home health and hospice.

2012 Convention & Trade Show a Great Success

Over 500 long term care professionals gathered in Hampton last week to honor the best and brightest that make Virginia’s nursing and assisted living facilities among the finest in the nation. Attendees received continuing education in dynamic and informative education sessions while 115 exhibitors brought the latest and greatest to trade show visitors.  Community involvement award winners, volunteers, departing Board members and the top five statewide award recipients were honored at the Annual Banquet.  In addition, 52 golfers and tournament sponsors supported the Regirer Nurse Scholarship Fundraiser Tournament to raise funds for future scholarship awards. The Virginia Health Care Association would like to thank the many organizations and individuals who contributed to the success of the 2012 Convention and Trade Show.  Thanks to our attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and golfers who made the 2012 Convention & Trade Show such an outstanding event!

With just a few more weeks to the start of National Assisted Living Week (NALW) September 9 – 15, now is the time to begin informing local media outlets of your community's celebrations.  The National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) makes it easy for members!  Visit NALW.org and find the Media Kit. The kit includes templates that members can use to contact and invite the media to cover your community’s activities and events. The kit contains a sample Letter to the Editor, a media advisory and press release template. A proclamation of NALW is also available. The NALW Product and Planning Guide has an explanation of how to use each item in the kit.

Commonwealth Care of Roanoke (CCR) opened its 12th nursing center, Abingdon Health and Rehab Center on July 19th.  The Abingdon center is a 120-bed health and rehab facility offering a 62-bed short term skilled nursing and rehab neighborhood, a 30-bed long term living neighborhood and a 28-bed secured memory care neighborhood.  Richie Alba, Administrator for the new center, said he and his staff have been busy applying the final touches and completing requirements for regulatory agencies on-site visita.  Though the center is brand new and state of the art in its design and equipment, Richie’s team has over 100 years of combined experience in post-acute rehabilitation and long term care services.  Melissa Armstrong, RN, BSN is the center’s Director of Nursing and has worked in long term care for 19 years.  The center welcomes the Abingdon community with an Open House Gala on August 2 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield has announced the opening of its new assisted living memory support wing.  "Our community has repeatedly asked us for support for their loved ones who are experiencing dementia," said CEO Jim Musgrave. The wing will provide secure private rooms, private dining and courtyard, activities, and around the clock health care support.  The public is invited to an open house for the new memory support wing at Lucy Corr Village from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on August 9th.

Board of Long Term Care Administrators Meets

At their June 19, 2012 meeting the Board of Long Term Care Administrators unanimously elected Virginia Heath Care Association (VHCA) members Tom Orsini as Board Chair and Martha Hunt as Board Vice-Chair for the 2012/2013 term.  In addition, Board Executive Director Lisa Hahn reported the following numbers of current licensees in Virginia: 76 nursing home administrators in training, 86 assisted living facility administrators in training, one “acting” assisted living facility administrator in training, 590 assisted living facility administrators, 160 assisted living facility preceptors; 798 nursing home administrators and 221 nursing home preceptors. 

AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program Silver Recipients Announced

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) is excited to announce the recipients of the 2012 Silver – Achievement in Quality award. This is the second level in the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award journey and recognizes a significant step in the journey towards performance excellence.  This year, 52 facilities across the country achieved the Silver award. This represents 17% of applicants, double the success rate from 2011.

Vernon Baker Chosen as AHCA/NCAL Future Long Term Care Leader

The Commonwealth LTC Foundation annually awards $1,500 scholarships to employees in VHCA/VCAL member nursing and assisted living facilities who want to become LPNs or RNs and continue their careers in long term care.  We hope to increase the number of awarded scholarships this year.  We need your help.  Please recommend qualified candidates today.

VHCA Member is Recipient of AANAC’s Nursing Director of the Year

The Virginia Health Care Association congratulates Nancy Chila, RN, BSN, recipient of the Nursing Director of the Year award given by the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC).  Ms. Chila is the Director of Nursing (DON) at Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Alexandria where she introduced and implemented systems and processes for survey readiness, risk assessment and raising clinical competencies.  She served as a mentor helping other nurses reach their professional goals and as an advocate for achievement of excellence in patient care at all levels.  Presentation of the award will be held in Jacksonville, Florida at AANAC’s Annual Conference Awards Dinner. AANAC is the professional membership organization of more than 12,000 long term care professionals.
