COPN Work Group Holds Second Meeting

The work group on Certificate of Public Need (COPN) established by the General Assembly met for the second time on August 19.  The work group heard a series of reports on additional topics that the work group members requested information about during their July meeting.

Commissioner of Health Marissa Levine, MD, MPH, FAAFP updated the work group on the state health improvement plan.  The panel was also provided an overview of Virginia’s COPN statutes and the State Medical Facilities Plan.  Staff from the Department of Health explained COPN programs in other states, including noting the moratoria and other controls used by states to restrict the number of nursing facility beds.

Douglas Suddreth, Autumn Corporation, represented the Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) on the panel.  VHCA continues to monitor this issue closely
