Continued Competency Requirements for Nurses

The Board of Nursing has published the final regulations for nursing education programs and continued competency requirement for renewal of registered nurse (RN) and licensed practical nurse (LPN) licenses.  The final regulations are effective for renewals beginning August 1.  According to the Department of Health Professions, the regulations:

  • Define nine different types of learning/practice activities approved as continued competency activities
  • Define “recognized providers” and “approved entities”
  • Address dual license concerns
  • Outline how to document compliance with these requirements

It is important to note that for the initial renewal after the effective date of new regulations (i.e., from August 2015 forward), RNs and LPNs will be required to attest to meeting continued competency requirements.  Documentation requirements begin for each renewal cycle thereafter.  Click here to read the final regulations and the FAQ from the Board on Nursing.
