AHCA Develops MDS-Focused Survey Tip Sheet

In early April, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin training surveyors in order to expand the MDS-Focused Survey.  You may recall that in mid-2014, CMS piloted a short-term focused survey to assess Minimum Data Set, Version 3.0 (MDS 3.0) coding practices and its relationship to resident care in nursing homes in five states, including Virginia. CMS has announced that they will expand these surveys in 2015 to be conducted nationwide, with the scope of some or all of the focused surveys to be expanded to include an assessment of the staffing levels of nursing facilities.

The American Health Care Association (AHCA), through a joint workgroup of the Survey/Regulatory and Clinical Practice Committees, has developed a tip sheet for providers to assist in their understanding of the focused surveys and an entrance document that a "test center" was given prior to an MDS-focused survey in early March, for your information.
