Completion of Death Certificates

Recently, a number of stakeholders have been working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to ensure that death certificates are signed in a timely manner.  One outcome of the meetings was a joint letter from Virginia Department of Health’s Commissioner, Marissa Levine, MD and the Virginia Board of Medicine’s Executive Director, William Harp, MD.  The letter is aimed at clearing up the main areas of confusion surrounding who is authorized to sign the death certificates.  In addition, the OCME has provided a list of frequently asked questions (FAQS) regarding the signing of death certificates.  VHCA requests that you provide the letter and FAQS to appropriate staff.  If you have any questions, please contact Keith Hare, Vice President of Government Relations at khare@vhca.org.
