General Assembly Public Hearing on Tax Preferences

The General Assembly’s Joint Subcommittee to Evaluate Tax Preferences is tasked with reviewing the many tax credits, deductions, subtractions, exemptions, and exclusions contained in the Virginia Code. They began their work last year and continue reviewing and evaluating provisions for recommendation to the full legislature.

Of note to nonprofit entities, the Joint Subcommittee is currently in the review process on the state sales tax exemption for nonprofit organizations under §58.1-609.11.

In order to gain a greater understanding of the impact of the exemption and solicit feedback from stakeholders, the Joint Subcommittee is holding a public hearing and accepting written comment letters. Members who would like to submit written communication on the importance of maintaining this exemption, may email comments to taxpreferences@dls.virginia.gov.  The public comment forum for in-person testimony will be Tuesday, August 26th at 1:00 pm in House Room D of the General Assembly Building at 9th and Broad Street in Richmond. Details on both options are available here.
