Continuing Education Proposed By Board of Nursing

The Virginia Board of Nursing is proposing a requirement for nurses to attend continuing education as a condition of renewal of their nursing licenses.  For those nurses currently working, the requirement would be 15 contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences or courses relevant to the practice of nursing in addition to 640 hours of active practice as a nurse.  For nurses not actively practicing, the requirement would be 30 contact hours for licensure renewal.  The proposed regulations include a list of providers who would be approved to offer educational opportunities.

Nurses interested in testifying on the requirement should attend a public hearing on the proposed regulations scheduled for November 13, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at the Department of Health Professions, 9960 Mayland Drive Perimeter Center, 2nd Floor Conference Center.  The Board will also accept written comments until December 7, 2012.  Comments should be sent to Jay P. Douglas, R.N., Executive Director, Board of Nursing, at the above address or email your comments to jay.douglas@dhp.virginia.gov.
