The issue of providing oral and dental care to nursing home residents is a challenging one.  Residents of nursing facilities typically have complex medical histories and a compromised health status. The prevalence of dental pain in nursing facility residents, especially those with dementia, is high.

Patricia Bonwell, RDH,BSDH, MSG, PhD serves as Dental Coordinator for Lucy Corr Village.  Dr. Bonwell presented earlier this month to attendees at the 2012 VHCA/VCAL Annual Convention in Hampton.  The Virginia Dental Association (VDA) recently published an article titled Nursing Home Residents: A Population in Need of Dental Care written by Dr. Bonwell.  With permission from Dr. Bonwell and the VDA, we are pleased to make the article available to our members.
