Board of Nursing Proposes Continued Competency Requirements

The Virginia Board of Nursing has proposed requiring continuing education as a condition of renewal of nursing licenses.  For nurses currently working, the requirement will be 15 contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences or courses relevant to the practice of nursing in addition to 640 hours of active practice as a nurse; for nurses not actively practicing, the requirement will be 30 contact hours for licensure renewal.  The proposal identifies a series of providers approved to offer the courses.

A public hearing on the proposed regulations is scheduled for November 13, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at the Department of Health Professions, 9960 Mayland Drive Perimeter Center, 2nd Floor Conference Center.  The Board will also accept written comments until December 7, 2012.  Comments should be sent to Jay P. Douglas, R.N., Executive Director, Board of Nursing, at the above address or email your comments.
