Department of Social Services Trainings Announced

Education Seminar

The Department of Gerontology & Department of Social Services (DSS) has provided a listing of the Spring 2012 DSS Trainings geared toward direct service providers working in assisted living or adult day facilities. 

Trainings include:

  • Individualized Service Plan (February 2012) Discussion of the Virginia licensing standards and the importance of an individualized service plan. Participants will also learn how to properly complete and interpret these forms.
  • Mental Health: Part II (March 2012) Review of the different types and medical causes for Psychosis with discussion related to intervention strategies. Participants will also discuss Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the older adult population.
  • Nutritional Needs (April 2012) Discussion of the basic nutritional and hydration needs of adults in long term care, as well as how nutrition affects cognitive and physical functioning. Participants will also learn about food-drug interactions, nutrition affected by chronic disease, and how to address feeding problems.
  • Emergency Preparedness (May 2012) Discussion of how to create an emergency preparedness plan, including what the staff roles are within the facility. Participants will identify any barriers related to safety and learn to create a disaster plan.

Trainings will be held in Abingdon, Fairfax, Hampton, Petersburg, Richmond, Salem, Virginia Beach and Winchester. Classes fill up quickly so please register early.
