Former Virginia HHR Secretary Confirmed to Lead CMS

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, Marilyn Tavenner was confirmed by the United States Senate on a vote of 91-7 to serve as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  Ms. Tavenner was originally nominated in December 2011 to replace Don Berwick, the former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  Ms. Tavenner is the first confirmed CMS administrator since 2006.  She will be responsible for running the Medicare and Medicaid programs and for implementing numerous provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

Ms. Tavenner began her career as a nurse and rose through the ranks to become hospital chief nursing officer and chief executive officer.  She was appointed to serve as Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources in 2005 by Governor Tim Kaine.  After her service as Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources (HHR), she began to serve in the federal health system.  She has been Acting Administrator of CMS since 2011.
