The pathway to successful surveys and resident outcomes is dependent on a strong foundation of integrated systems that take into account changes in regulations, delivery of current standards of care and survey compliance to avoid deficient practices.  Addressing these components will promote a dynamic quality improvement philosophy that keeps the organization ahead of survey risks and puts sustainable systems in place to achieve positive resident outcomes, satisfaction and survey compliance.

The program will review Virginia’s top deficiencies and examine trends in citations captured from deficiency reports conducted in 2013. An analysis from VHCA’s SMART (Survey Management and Resource Tool) Program will assist participants in learning about opportunities to minimize risks prior to and during a long term care survey.  Attendees will additionally have the opportunity to hear from OLC’s newly appointed Director of Long Term Care Kathaleen Creegan-Tedeschi who will share her goals and philosophy on the survey process and address pertinent issues confronting providers.

Survey trends collected over recent years have confirmed a significant growth and continuing increase in deficiencies related to care and management of residents with diabetes. Therefore, a specific focus for the day will be on the management of diabetes from the clinical, dietary and best practice perspectives.  Recent changes in the standards of care for residents with diabetes, including new treatment protocols for insulin administration, monitoring of blood sugars, and a culture change in dietary allowances, will be discussed by panel members who will present their perspectives on effective management of diabetes in long term care residents. Operational strategies to promote resident engagement and establish maintainable systems to maintain compliance related to the frequently cited deficiencies associated with diabetic management will be explored by panelists. Don’t let diabetes care be a “bump in the road to success” for your facility, residents and staff.
